Raising the Rooftops, the Regional Refugee Women’s Conference, will take place on Wednesday 7th March, 9am to 4pm, at St Mary’s Conference Centre, Sheffield.
Raising the Rooftops is an excellent occasion for activists and agencies to network, exchange ideas, develop a regional action plan, and discuss strategies for ensuring that services are sensitive to the needs of refugee women.
Confirmed Speakers:
- Beatrice Botomani (Yorkshire and Humber Refugee of the Year 2011 and activist)
- Yvonne Cass (Deputy Chair of the Refugee Council)
- Charlotte Gage (Women’s Resource Centre, London)
- Rose McCarthy (Refugee Council/NCT)
Workshop topics will include:
- Trafficking
- Forced Marriage
- Using CEDAW to defend the rights of refugee women
- Sexual Health and the rights of refugee women
- The Refugee Women’s Charter
- Working with women affected by rape and sexual violence- looking after ourselves
- Campaigning with a gendered focus
There will also be a reading by former Derbyshire Poet Laureate and current Hawthornden Fellow River Wolton.
There are still stalls available; if your organisation would like a stall please contact us no later than 13th February 2011.
Groups that have participated in planning the event include: Apna Haq; Ashiana; Bradford Refugee Forum; Centre for HIV & Sexual Health, Sheffield (CHIV); Development and Empowerment for Women’s Advancement (DEWA); the Northern Refugee Centre; Refugee Council; South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group (SYMAAG); Why Refugee Women; and WomenCentre (Calderdale & Kirklees).
Raising the Rooftops is free to attend, but please <contact us to book a place> no later than 21 February 2012. There will be a children’s area for pre-school children. Children must be
booked in advance.
