UK Feminista launches suite of resources for primary schools

UK Feminista has launched a suite of resources to support primary schools to tackle sexism.

Research conducted by UK Feminista and the NEU showed that sexist language, gender stereotyping and sexual harassment are widespread in primary schools and are experienced by both students and staff. Over a third (34%) of primary school teachers say they witness gender stereotyping in their school on at least a weekly basis. Exposure to gender stereotyping amongst younger children fosters discriminatory attitudes and limits aspirations.

The suite of new resources for primary school settings includes guidance for governors on how and why primary schools need to take action to tackle sexism, and a range of classroom activities for all age ranges. The classroom activities focus on exploring gender stereotypes in an age-appropriate way and can be used as standalone lessons or as part of an RSHE programme.

Supporting younger children to recognise and challenge the inherent unfairness of gender stereotypes is a crucial step in promoting respect between boys and girls and creating an environment where children can learn and live as equals. It is essential to start these conversations at an early age to prevent sexism from becoming entrenched and normalised further on in the education system.
